Gallery Opening: Selected Works by Shawn Martinson

  • 732 Charlotte Street Fredericton, NB (map)

We’re elated to share with you our latest exhibition: Selected Works by Shawn Martinson. Plus, our annual Faster Than Light showcase, and new works by emerging artist Sydney Smith.

The Charlotte Street Arts Centre’s second exhibition of the summer season brings together a wealth of creative voices to animate both the Charlotte Glencross and Penny galleries. Mixing oil, acrylic, ink, and photography, this upcoming exhibition series presents work by established and emerging artists from the Greater Fredericton Area, all making their CSAC debut.

Shawn Martinson is one of the region’s most admired and respected tattoo artists. His work, proudly worn by hundreds, combines contemporary themes and imagery with obvious nods to some of modern tattooing’s foundational artists like Bert Grimm and Norman Collins aka Sailor Jerry.

Selected Works by Shawn Martinson mixes hand painted flash sheets, woodcuts, and canvas work with influential elements spanning his decades-long year career hidden through many of the pieces.

Sydney Smith is an emerging painter from Fredericton. For his debut exhibition, Sydney pushed aside all ego and expectation of what it means to be an artist, choosing to create pieces guided entirely by shape, colour, and emotion. Selected Works by Sydney Smith represents an initial first step by an artist committed to exploring meaning and self expression through visual art.

CSAC’s annual Faster Than Light exhibition brings together a collection of photographs created during a four week program delivered as part of the Centre’s ArtReach programming.

Through an ongoing partnership with the Multicultural Association of Fredericton, with support from the City of Fredericton and Isaac’s Way, Faster Than Light teaches photography basics to newcomer youth as a way to encourage artistic expression without barriers. This exhibition includes 13 photographs, each one selected by the individual program participants.

Opening reception: Thursday August 8, 5-7 p.m.

On display until September 23.
