About the Residency:
The Anne Mitton Memorial Writer in Residence Program honours the life and legacy of Fredericton educator, author, playwright, mentor, and storyteller Anne Mitton (1940–2026). Throughout her distinguished career, Anne inspired generations of learners and writers through her work as a teacher, literacy specialist, writing instructor, and published author. This residency reflects her lifelong commitment to nurturing creativity, encouraging emerging voices, and building community through the written word.
Anne Mitton was a celebrated New Brunswick educator and writer whose work included poetry, short fiction, plays, and creative non-fiction. Her writing was published in literary magazines and anthologies across Canada, and her collection of short stories, Inside Stories, was published in 1993. A dedicated mentor and lifelong advocate for literacy, Anne continued to teach and inspire writers long after her formal retirement. This residency seeks to honour her belief that everyone has a story worth telling.
The successful applicant for this residency program will receive an $8,000 bursary to support their work over a six month period. One artist will be chosen each year for a fall-spring residency (November to April). During the residency, the Writer in Residence will:
Focus primarily on the development of their own creative writing project.
Lead one six-week community writing series designed for emerging writers or writers new to the craft.
Facilitate one weekend intensive workshop on a writing topic of their choice.
Participate in a public reading and celebration showcasing both their work and selected work from workshop participants.
Given Anne's interdisciplinary writing career, this residency is open to a broad range of literary practices: Applications are welcomed from writers working in:

What is the objective of this program?
The objective of this program is to support existing writers and encourage others to explore the creative writing process.
What are the deadlines?
Applications open September 15 and close October 16, 2026. The residency will run for six months.
How much money will I receive?
The successful applicant will receive an $8000 bursary paid in equal monthly installments to support their work and the delivery of both public programs.
Who can apply?
This residency is open to all residents of New Brunswick. A resident is defined as a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant who has resided in New Brunswick for at least one year immediately preceding the application deadline.
Public Programming:
The six-week writer’s program will take place at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre on a mutually agreed upon set of dates. Such programs typically run for 1.5 - 2 hours once a week for six weeks. The maximum number of participants for each workshop is 12.
The weekend workshop will be held over a two-day period (Saturday and Sunday - 10-4 p.m.) on a mutually agreed upon set of dates. The maximum number of participants TBD.
