An Introduction to Creative Sketchbooking

  • 732 Charlotte Street Fredericton, NB (map)

The sketchbook is a crucial part of artistic practice, but it’s all too easy to worry about the blank page, agonize over producing perfect art, or get stuck in a rut. This two-hour workshop will focus on sketchbook experimentation and creative joy. Use your sketchbook as a place to play with different art styles and media and to embrace bold mark making and loose, gestural painting. Via guided instruction and demonstrations, we will consider different types of materials and practice different techniques for layering mixed media. The last part of the class will focus on you applying these techniques to your own ideas.

Recommended materials:

  • An inexpensive sketchbook or two that is usable for mixed media (any size). I

recommend Royal Talens Art Creations sketchbooks.

  • Any mix of wet/dry media people have on hand (exceptions: oils and dry pastels). Suggestions: watercolour, gouache, acrylic paints, coloured pencils, wax pastels,

markers, or small stamps or block prints. I will also bring some materials for students to try.

  • pencil and/or pen

  • some reference photos
